The Tale of Colorism

Cocoa cutie, eyes set so deep

Tears heavy as cement as they began to creep.

Out of its hiding place of her broken soul

the anguish of ghetto living taking its' final toll.

Bronze baby with the sweetened smile,

never revealing its true causity all the while.

Immersing out the depths of her own insecurity

and regurgitated as word daggers sharp as can be.

Both of them beautiful chocolate candies,

fillings smooth as buttery satin .

Each of them wondering the same question in mind:

"If I traded lives with her, what would happen??"

CC: "Would my hair be a softened wave instead of coarse as carpet, nappy kinks?"

BB: "Maybe I could have lips as full as hers, or her velvet skin tone more priceless than mink."

CC: "Gosh, so many boys flock her way all the time. While I'm at max , just the home girl...."

BB: "She's quiet mostly, but I can sense she's priceless, worth more than any ruby or pearl."

And as each of the little girls spent more time envying what the other one had ,

out came their big spirit sister, heartbroken and sad.

"My angels, why do you believe that you alone aren't enough?",

Bellowed the Midnight Melanin Maven, who was gentle but tough.

Both girls scream, "Because she's special and I'm not!"

"Oh my babies 😭 it appears this most important lesson , you both have forgot. "

"See, no matter what physical features you both have been blessed with,

use them instead of putting one another down to give each other strength."

BB and CC took each other hand in hand,

embracing and promising not to make the other feel like less again.

"In the Maven's garden, there's an abundance of space and room

to plant your seeds and care for them, watching them grow and bloom."

Moral of this short, heartfelt story: own up to what the good Lord gave,

remind yourself in times of doubt that it's okay to be brave.

Be your own beautiful black butterfly with wings spread so big and free,

and realize that the validation you outwardly seek already lies within thee.
