Spotlight Series: The Just Girl Project

Hello, all! I know I've been a little MIA (or a lot of MIA---new nurse struggles lol), but it's finally time for another episode of the Spotlight Series! *Now, like always, just in case you're a brand new reader to my blog,  missed the last episode or any of them, you can click right here to play catch up OR  click this here label that says "Spotlight Series" to read from the very beginning!

Alright, now gracing us with their presence is the beautiful Ilana Harkavy!! Aside from dabbling in the world of the musical arts, Ilana is one of three founders of The Just, Girl. Project---a fiery musical movement that empowers girls to embrace their passions, be blatantly honest, and to take ownership of their individual struggles. Founded last year, the aim of JGP  is to inspire girls everywhere to be the best versions of themselves through the power of hit-worthy music. Many of you out there know how powerful and unifying that music can be, so after a follow on Twitter had brought us together, I decided to check them out myself and was very much impressed! But, now let me stop talking and let Ilana take it away:

1) What is the purpose of The Just, Girl. Project?

The Just, Girl. Project is a music movement to empower girls to be embrace their passions, be brutally honest, and to take ownership of their individual struggles.  We utilize music in order to connect with girls, relate to them, and hopefully inspire them to be raw, bold, and beautiful.

 2) Why did you create The Just, Girl. Project?

I knew that I wanted to make music that was raw & honest, and that could impact my audience in a meaningful way. My little sister Shula has always stressed to me the importance of being a positive role model. Since I’ve always been passionate about girl culture and mentorship, I felt it would be a great idea to create an album devoted to the thing I love most in this world—being a big sister.

I believe that this project has the ability to revolutionize music and girl culture, as having music that ‘gets you’ is so important. My new EP, Just, Girl. will be the first release from The Just, Girl. Project so its very personal to me.

3) Where do you see The Just, Girl, Project going in the future?

The one-year plan is simple. Just, Girl. will be released in May! I want to create amazing music videos with strong messages, as well as tour worldwide to perform and promote the songs. I would also love to make this EP a full-length album by creating an additional 5+ songs.

On the non-music side of things, I want to create an Etsy store. My team and I will handcraft personalized items such as mirrors, bracelets, journals, and dream boards that include lyrics and positive affirmations that girls and guys alike can use to inspire and coach them through every day.
But more importantly, I want to continue growing the movement online. I’ll continue to write in my blog and create social campaigns devoted to positive and honest messages for young women.
I want this movement to grow exponentially. I want to start The Just, Girl. Project mentorship program and a non-profit and/or foundation, a record label where we can develop artists with strong social messages, and a global movement!
4) Who or what inspired you to create The Just, Girl Project?
My sister Shula was the one that initially inspired me, but among further investigating, I startled upon a shocking subculture online-- social media accounts devoted to the promotion of anorexia, bulimia, and self-harm. It broke my heart because, not only did I feel saddened by these negative messages, but I also related to them since I had gone through similar struggles.  I wanted to create music for these girls above all.
5) How would your life be different if you didn't have The Just, Girl. Project?
I wouldn't have meaning in my life...this is the thing I love...this is my life's work...this is what I need to do. There's no other option.

Before I sign off, I wanted to thank Ilana for carving out some time to share the Just, Girl. Project with the rest of the world :) If you would like to learn more about Ilana and Just, Girl. check out all her links down below :
