Spotlight Series: Misadventures of a Military Wife
Welcome back! As promised, I am now delivering my second episode of the Spotlight Series
for the week! Just in case you missed any of the other episodes or are
new to my blog--welcome by the way!--and have NO idea what the heck I'm
rambling about, you can simply scroll to the end of this post and click the link
that says 'Spotlight Series" and you can get all the way caught up. [or if you don't like scrolling, click the link for my most recent episode: http://scarsofshe.blogspot.com/2014/06/spotlight-series-my-life-in-high-heels.html]
For this episode, my special guest is my Italian homegirl Madelain Garcia! She's a 25 year old from a small beach town (Navarre) in Florida with a few special qualities about her:
1) she now currently lives in Italy, learning how to be a God-led wife and newfound gardener
2) she's currently pursuing writing a fiction book
and 3) trying to encourage other followers of Christ through her blog, ChristianaLove--fun fact: 'Christiana' means 'follower of Christ' in Latin!
When she's not busy keeping the Italian home fires burning, she loves to travel, meet new people,
worship and tell the world about the amazing father we have in heaven :)
However, the thing that really drew me to her was the fact she is, in fact, a military wife. While she is in pursuit of her graduate degree through Liberty University, her husband is currently enlisted in the Air Force. Knowing a few military wives and having my own mom experience that, I felt a deeper connection to her, though we live on opposite sides of the world. I had to know more about how she holds it down on the Italian homefront while her husband is away:
1)What made you decide to join the military in the first place?
It was all God! I remember going to a dinner, just as 'the girlfriend' one point of time, with a few married couples from my husband's work and thinking to myself "I could get used to this". I enjoyed it, surprisingly.
2) Did you ever believe that you would be a military wife one day? Why or why not?
No, actually I didn't want to marry into the military—due to my father being an army veteran. I saw the difficulties war could have on a person, through my own father, and didn't want that kind of life for myself or family. But God works in mysterious ways. I always wanted to travel and live all over the world, and I prayed for a husband to have certain attributes. When God brought me my husband and I saw those qualities in him, minus the fact he was military, I was so starstruck that I opened my heart up to what God was doing. I am thankful I did.
3) What is one wonderful about being a military wife ?
The people you meet and the sense of community it brings. Plus I understand that our christian mission is where the military sends us.There are also many perks & benefits, like military discounts or the healthcare system.
4) What is one not so pleasant thing about being a military wife?
The sacrifices it takes. Our first year of marriage was spent apart because my husband was stationed in South Korea at an air base I wasn't authorized to live with him. It was difficult and a growing process for both of us. God opened a door where I had the chance to visit almost three months out of that year with him, which included our first anniversary together, but overall it was challenging. I am thankful we had the Lord and the understanding that we were destined to be together because many marriages were known to fall apart from that specific year tour in Korea. It's a blessing we made it through and came out stronger in the end.
5) How would your life be different if you weren't a military wife?
I would like to say I'd picture myself with a journalism career somewhere in a big city, but it's actually so hard to think of the 'what ifs' when I know in my heart this is the right path.
6) If you had to choose between the military and your husband, what would you choose? Why?
My husband for sure! The military is just his platform or his career. I pray God keeps him safe and out of any war zone all the time, along with our country. But times are getting rough within the military too. There are cutbacks being made and people getting transferred out or into different jobs. I am thankful he has an income because right now it's the only income we have. I pray God continues to guide us in the path he has for us.
Thank you, Madelain once again for letting your beautiful light shine all the way from Italia! If you wanna find out more about her misadvanetures, you can check out her blog [christianalove.blogspot.com] and follow her on Twitter [https://twitter.com/_ChristianaLove].
