We've Already Met--A Female's Response to "Darling" by Max Schneider
*In order to understand my point of view in this piece, listen to the song first down below![https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hokUIig3Apw]
[In comes a boy still reeling from heartbreak, when he spots the girl that used to be his best friend, but is secretly in love with him.]
[In comes a boy still reeling from heartbreak, when he spots the girl that used to be his best friend, but is secretly in love with him.]
"Wasn't expecting to see me here, were you??
Well, come on, sit down for a minute.
Now before you dash, just hear me out. Please.
I heard your girl broke your heart, downright annihilated it.
Guess your angel wasn't so perfect after all.
But, it's been a while since I've seen you last,
and I'll be leaving soon.
But before my departure, I just want to ask you about that girl one last time.
And let you in on a little secret I've been keeping tucked away.
I know I'm not her and never will be--beautiful, bubbly, well-liked, perky, the 'good girl' who you swore you knew but really didn't.
I mean, did she ever truly see how your face lights up when you read a great book, saw a funny movie or reminisced about that road trip to Myrtle Beach when you were 8 and you rightfully earned the title "Lobster Boy"?
Did she smell the faint scent of Sensuality cologne lingering on that old Beatles tee that you wore faithfully, allowing your sweetness to invade her nostrils whilst tickling her inner senses?
Did she ever feel the warmth of your sculpted arms engulfing her tiny frame in your embrace, the slight prickly scruff along your jawline as her dainty hand caressed your face or the rise and fall of your chest as you hummed Ribbon in the Sky in her ears with such soul and life??
Did she hear the joy in your laughter, taste the passion in your shower of stolen kisses, listen to the eerily silent cries from your severing heart strands as you blankly stare at the angels' sweat drops pelting the ground in rhythm with your salt-filled tears, wondering where you had lost the grip on her heart and why you just cannot find any trace of her??
Now before you begin the continual cyclical lament to the universe abut Mrs. Right :
.....Darling I know, you're a million footsteps away,
but maybe someday,
I can take those footsteps and pray that I can run to you
run to you anyway.......
but maybe someday,
I can take those footsteps and pray that I can run to you
run to you anyway.......
Hear me say this: You don't have to run to get to her. You never had to.
Truth is, she never needed to be found.
Because she was always right in front of you.
To you, she was the one that you give daily nougies,
the one who you'd hit up the vinyl store with for the next asset to the shared collection of records, CDs and cassette tapes you two begun at the tender ages of 5 and 6.
She was the one that went ice skating in the middle of January
in an old abandoned rink owned by the neighborhood mom n' pop shop, though she was deathly afraid.
She was merely.....just a friend to you. No more, no less.
But in truth, she is your queen with a tilted crown,
the one who cannot keep on lipstick worth a damn,
but can be shamelessly silly with you--
the one who prefers Chipotle and comedy
over foie gras and frills,
but only lets you hold her when she cries--
the one who constantly loses her focus
because she's so busy helping you maintain yours.
She could see your beauty shine through your ugly moments,
your yearning heart for something deeper, incomparable, real.
But I guess she told you just a little too late, huh?
So you can choose to sit around and keep asking yourself:
Darling , darling , will we meet again?
And she'll look good and hard at you , gather the little bit of dignity she has left and silently whisper to herself as she walks away from you forever:
"Darling, we've already met."
